Street Foods of Dhaka

First of all, Dhaka street food might not be for those who are excessively hygiene conscious. Yes, it can be tough to swallow at times when one observes the food storage, handling, preparation and the manner and means used for serving. But once you get past all of that or at least try, it can turn out to be a pretty rewarding experience.

Now there are many different types of food that are being sold in the streets of Dhaka. I am only presenting just a few that I have tried and had the opportunity to snap a picture or two.

I will begin with “jhaal muri”. This is a mixture of puffed rice, chanachur (small fried bits of lentil flour, peanuts, etc.) , some sort of beans or chickpeas, onions, chili, tomatoes, oil and some special spices. Of course, there are a few variants of this particular street food. The picture below shows a street vendor busy putting his ingredients in a can after which he will close it and give it a good shake. It might then be served in a small paper bag or cone.

Here’s another picture of a different vendor selling his version of “jhaal muri”. This one had curry powder in the mix. Also, right next to him is another vendor selling peanuts and that is also another common item sold in the streets of Dhaka.

Besides the traditional items, I also noticed other types of food that has been introduced more recently. I came across burger carts like the one below.

It’s actually pretty good food. The burgers I tired were not too bad and the fries were crispy. Below is another shot of a guy about to prepare some burgers.

I have also come across shwarma sandwich stands and was pretty impressed at the local demand for it. It seems to have caught on and quickly became a popular favorite among the locals.

Now certain fruits like guava, star fruits, etc. are sold commonly although I don’t have any pictures of those. I did notice there were quite a few vendors selling cucumbers and carrots especially during the hot season. Interestingly, business seemed very good for them.

And lastly, I cannot end this topic without mentioning one of the most important street foods of Dhaka. It happens to be “chatpati” which is a concoction of chickpeas and potatoes in spices served with onions, chili, cilantro and boiled egg. It is also served in small crusty shells and is called “fuchka”. While I did not get a shot of the chatpati or the chatpati cart, I do have a picture of a plate of “fuchka”. It is served with tamarind sauce and it does taste very good.
